Radical Rethinking: Sustainable development models for Hong Kong’s future

Organised by Hassell Limited

Our world is facing changes as well as opportunities at a speed and complexity that humans have never experienced before. In Hong Kong, two significant events are on the urban environment horizon that will be pivotal from a sustainability perspective for the city: along with a glut of new A-grade buildings coming onto the market, there will be a large amount of buildings coming to the end of their lifecycle. On the one hand, there will be an oversupply of office buildings, and on the other hand, an affordable housing problem that continually plagues Hong Kong. The question we delve into is - how can we sustainably repurpose or reinvigorate ageing stock rather than demolish and rebuild? The second event is the construction of the Northern Metropolis along new infrastructure corridors, integrating Hong Kong with Shenzhen. How can this mass expansion happen sustainably? Our exhibition looks at both these questions and also pulls on recent studies Hassell has done in other markets, providing both a global and local view.
